The Secret to a Great Firm Website

By: Ally Lozano, CEO and Founder

Creating a firm website is overwhelming to the majority of lawyers. While we need a website to establish our legitimacy as lawyers and as business owners, we have no idea where to start. (Needless to say, website design is not our forte.)

Here's the secret to having a great firm website: Simple is better.

There is no need for all of the bells and whistles. There is definitely no need to pay $500 a month or more to a company for a "legal website."

Here are a few tips to make a great and simple website:

Get a Domain

Buy your domain yourself and retain ownership. It is super simple to buy it through godaddy.com. One of the biggest mistakes lawyers make is that they hire a company to set that up for them and then that company ends up owning the site or denying access to it without paying more.

Pick Your Website Host

Pick a user-friendly website host, such as GoDaddy, Wix, or SquareSpace. You need to be able to log in and make any changes that you would like to make, without figuring out much of the "how."

Find a Web Designer

Hire someone to do your web design, but don't give them all the power. Let them login to your site, but be sure to keep your login information so that you can access it any time that you need to.

Create Your Content

  • Keep the text SIMPLE and SHORT. Use bulletpoints whenever you can. Lawyers are verbose, but our websites shouldn't be.
  • Make sure you answer you address your potential clients' pain points. Your site should show that you understand their fears and concerns and that you can offer a solution.
  • The "About Me" page is an opportunity to explain your WHY. Why do you do this work? Why are you different from other lawyers? Why should they hire your firm? Why should they hire you specifically? A potential client wants to know that s/he can trust you with his/her life and money. Your About Me should answer every question that a potential client would want to ask.
  • Break free of cookie cutter lawyer sites. Don't be like everyone else. Let your uniqueness come through your site.

Give it a try and share a link to your site below!
