Here’s my Swedish contribution to your collection of holiday recipes – it was my grandmother’s preferred Christmas cookie (and my favorite Christmas cookie recipe of all time, the ingredients are simple and the cookies are so delicate and buttery! I remember making these with my Swedish grandmother in the kitchen of her home in Michigan – I’m pretty sure I ate more dough than I actually put on to the pans!!):

Swedish Spritz Cookies

*there are many ways to shape and add toppings to these cookies, but for this recipe you will need a cookie press with a star-shaped opening to squirt the dough through

Cream together:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ lb. butter
  • (½ tsp. salt, if using unsalted butter)

Add:

  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. almond extract
  • 1 egg yolk

Mix the above together well.  Then mix in:   2 cups flour

Place cookie dough into a cookie press with a star-shaped opening and squirt the dough through into long strands. Cut strands and bend into your desired size circle (in the shape of a wreath). Bake at 350 – 375 until slightly golden (exact time will differ depending on the width of the press used).
